Moderate study design Women with PMDD

What they did

Randomized, placebo-controlled trial of Yasmin (ethinylestradiol and drospirenone), a birth control pill, in women with PMDD. The study measured 22 different premenstrual symptoms and compared women taking Yasmin to those taking placebo.

What they found

Women taking Yasmin showed consistently greater reduction of all 22 premenstrual symptoms assessed compared to the placebo group. For appetite, acne, and food craving, the difference between groups was statistically significant (p = 0.027).

What it means for you

Yasmin may offer an alternative to antidepressants for treating PMDD. However, these are preliminary results; the study size and duration are not specified in the abstract. More research is needed before drawing firm conclusions.
