Case-control study, 2025
Are emotional eating and dietary habits linked to PMS?
Yes. Women with PMS have higher scores for emotional eating and differences in dietary habits compared to women without PMS.
What they did
462 women aged 18-49 completed questionnaires about their symptoms, diet, and eating behaviors. The researchers measured PMS severity, diet quality using a Mediterranean diet scale, and emotional eating patterns.
What they found
Among the 462 women, 309 (66.9%) had PMS. Women with PMS had significantly higher emotional eating scores and higher PMS severity scores compared to women without PMS. Their dietary habits also differed from women without PMS.
What it means for you
Emotional eating and diet may be linked to PMS symptoms, but this study does not show that changing diet or eating patterns would improve PMS. The findings are from one time point in one location, so may not apply to all women.
