Survey study, 2014

Does individualized homeopathic medicine reduce PMS symptoms?

Possibly. More than half of women (57.5%) had PMS scores drop by at least 50% with treatment, though without a control group the improvement may partly be due to placebo or natural recovery.

Early or limited evidence 77 women with premenstrual syndrome or premenstrual symptoms

What they did

77 women with PMS kept daily symptom diaries for 2 months to confirm diagnosis. Then 52 of these women received individualized homeopathic treatment based on an algorithm using 11 different homeopathic medicines. Doctors could adjust treatment at follow-up visits over a 9-month period.

What they found

Of the 52 women who completed the study, 30 (57.5%) had PMS scores drop by at least 50%. There was no clear difference in improvement whether women used the algorithm-recommended medicines or other homeopathic options. Women whose PMS was more severe at the start showed greater overall improvement.

What it means for you

More than half of women reported substantial symptom improvement. However, there was no control group for comparison, some women dropped out (77 enrolled but only 52 completed), and it cannot determine whether improvement comes from the specific medicines, placebo effect, or natural change. The findings are encouraging but not conclusive.
