Survey study, 2013
Do women with PMDD have sleep problems?
Yes. About a quarter have sleep disorders, and over half experience excessive daytime sleepiness.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 67 female college students with PMDD in Iran. Researchers used two questionnaires to assess sleep quality and risk for sleep apnea.
What they found
25 percent had sleep disorders. 52.2 percent reported daytime sleepiness. 3 percent snored. 94 percent were at low risk for sleep apnea, while 6 percent had risk of sleep apnea.
What it means for you
Many women with PMDD struggle with sleep, but serious sleep disorders like sleep apnea are uncommon. Sleep problems in PMDD may affect daily functioning and mood. This was a small study in one university in Iran, so results may not apply to other populations.
