Can high-speed imaging detect voice box changes before menstruation?
Yes. High-speed imaging shows swelling and changes in the voice box before menstruation, even when women do not notice voice problems.
What they did
21 women aged 20 to 31 had their voice boxes examined using high-speed digital imaging during the follicular phase (early in the menstrual cycle) and again 2 to 3 days before menstruation.
What they found
Before menstruation, 19% of women complained of hoarseness and voice tiredness. However, 81% reported no voice problems even though imaging showed swelling in the voice box. No women had voice problems in the follicular phase.
What it means for you
Voice changes happen before menstruation even when women do not notice them, and imaging can detect these changes. This is a small study in one location, so findings may not apply widely. The study does not explain why these voice changes occur.
