Survey study, 2019
Does having a regular menstrual cycle affect how much PMS a teenage girl has?
No. Whether a girl's cycle was regular or not did not affect how much PMS she had.
Early or limited evidence 89 teenage girls in Salatiga, Indonesia
What they did
Researchers randomly selected 89 girls from a population of 405 girls in a city in Indonesia and asked them about their menstrual cycle patterns and PMS symptoms in a questionnaire.
What they found
Most girls (58.4%) had regular menstrual cycles, and most (76.4%) had no or mild PMS symptoms. However, cycle regularity did not appear to affect PMS levels.
What it means for you
How regular a girl's menstrual cycle is does not seem to predict how bad her PMS will be. The main limits are that this was one city in Indonesia, and because it is observational we cannot know for sure about cause and effect.
