Survey study, 2025
Does stress make PMS worse, based on past research?
Most of the studies reviewed, 9 out of 10, found a significant link between stress and PMS, suggesting stress likely plays a role, though this paper itself is only a review of other studies and not new research.
What they did
The authors did a literature review, searching databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar for studies published in the last 10 years on the link between stress level and PMS. They reviewed 10 journal articles in total.
What they found
Of the 10 journals reviewed, 9 reported a significant relationship between stress level and PMS, while 1 reported no relationship. The authors note that stress is thought to affect the balance of estrogen and progesterone and to lower serotonin levels.
What it means for you
Across most of the existing studies, higher stress tends to go along with more PMS, supporting the idea that stress is a trigger for PMS symptoms. Because this is a narrative review of only 10 studies rather than new data collection, its conclusions depend on the quality of those original studies, which it does not describe in detail.

Original abstract
