Survey study, 2023
Does the menstrual cycle phase affect smoking cessation outcomes?
Withdrawal symptoms and cravings do not differ across menstrual cycle phases, but quit rates were higher during the luteal phase. However, the evidence is limited and contradictory.
What they did
Scoping review of 10 articles from four databases (Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO) that compared menstrual cycle phases or analyzed premenstrual syndrome and smoking withdrawal.
What they found
No difference in withdrawal symptoms and craving between menstrual cycle phases. Abstinence rates were higher during the luteal phase.
What it means for you
Starting smoking cessation during the luteal phase might improve quit rates, but this needs more research. The main limitation is that current evidence is contradictory and based on a limited number of studies.
