Survey study, 2014
Is childhood abuse more common in women with PMDD?
Yes. Women with PMDD reported more childhood emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional neglect than healthy women.
What they did
Compared 70 women with PMDD to 78 healthy women in Turkey, asking both groups about childhood abuse and trauma using questionnaires.
What they found
Women with PMDD reported more childhood emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional neglect than healthy women. In the PMDD group, 31.4% had a family history of PMDD, 11.4% had psychiatric problems after childbirth, and 7.1% had attempted suicide.
What it means for you
Women with PMDD in this study experienced more childhood abuse. However, we cannot say if the abuse caused PMDD or if other factors are involved. The study was from one location in Turkey only.
