Does taking extra nefazodone before your period help depression that worsens premenstrually?
Yes, all 3 women in the study showed significant improvement with extra nefazodone taken before their period, but not with placebo. However, the study was very small.
What they did
Three women with depression that worsens premenstrually were given either extra nefazodone or placebo before their expected menstrual period in a double-blind crossover design. The study lasted 6 months, with treatment alternating each cycle.
What they found
All 3 subjects showed significant improvement for the months in which they received nefazodone supplements, but not when given placebo.
What it means for you
While premenstrual dose increases of nefazodone appear clinically promising, this study included only 3 women, so we cannot be confident the results would apply to others. Much more research is needed.
