Does individualized homeopathic medicine reduce PMS symptoms?

Yes. Women who received individualized homeopathic medicines showed significant reductions in PMS symptoms compared to placebo by month 2, with benefits continuing through month 3. The study was very small and needs larger follow-up studies.

Early or limited evidence Female participants of reproductive age with PMS lasting more than 3 months

What they did

Female participants of reproductive age with PMS lasting over 3 months were randomly assigned to receive either individualized homeopathic medicines or placebo in a double-blind trial. Symptoms were measured using three different questionnaires at baseline and every month for 3 months. Neither participants nor researchers knew who received the real medicine until after.

What they found

The homeopathic group showed significant reductions in PMS symptoms by month 2 (dropping by 5.5 points) and continuing through month 3 (dropping by 6.6 points) compared to placebo. Other symptom measures also improved significantly. Natrum muriaticum was the most commonly prescribed remedy. Adverse events were rare in both groups.

What it means for you

These results suggest individualized homeopathic medicines may reduce PMS symptoms more than placebo. The study was very small and very few people received each remedy, so it is unclear if findings would hold in larger studies or different populations. Further independent research is needed to confirm.
