Survey study, 2010
Does PMS severity affect quality of life and sexual desire?
Yes. Higher PMS severity was linked to more limitations in daily activities and quality of life. Compared to women with no PMS (45.7%), more women with PMS (67.5%) or PMDD (73.3%) reported sexual desire problems.
What they did
949 women at different levels of PMS severity answered questionnaires about their quality of life and sexual desire. This was a secondary analysis of existing survey data.
What they found
Women with PMS (67.5%) or PMDD (73.3%) were much more likely to report sexual desire problems than women with no PMS (45.7%). Higher PMS severity was linked to more limitations in physical health, mental health, and daily activities.
What it means for you
PMS and PMDD are associated with reduced sexual desire and quality of life. However, this study analyzed existing data and cannot prove whether PMS causes these problems, these problems cause PMS, or both happen together.
