Survey study, 2024

What types of premenstrual syndrome exist and how common are they?

Premenstrual syndrome comes in four types: anxiety-type (38%), swelling-type (26%), depression-type (22%), and cravings-type (11%). We can be fairly confident of this, though the study only included students in one Russian city.

Early or limited evidence 128 university students from 20 countries studying in Kursk, Russia, average age 22 years

What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 128 female university students (average age 22) from 20 countries studying in Kursk, Russia who completed an online questionnaire about menstrual symptoms, lifestyle, diet, sleep, caffeine, smoking, and alcohol use.

What they found

84% of participants had PMS, with 25% having a severe form. Anxiety-type PMS was most common at 38%, followed by swelling-type at 26%, depression-type at 22%, and cravings-type at 11%. In winter, 55% reported worse symptoms, with 32% having anxiety-type and 25% having swelling-type.

What it means for you

This suggests PMS comes in different forms and may worsen in winter, possibly due to less activity and more time indoors. However, it only studied students in one Russian city, so findings may not apply to all women or other regions.
