Survey study, 2017

Are PMS symptoms linked to mood disorders and personality?

This study found significant relationships between PMS symptoms and lifelong mania or hypomania symptoms, and between PMS and personality traits. Because it was cross-sectional, we cannot know if hormonal changes in PMS cause mood and personality changes.

Early or limited evidence 294 university students from Istanbul, mostly aged 20-23

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 294 university students from Istanbul. Researchers used questionnaires to measure PMS symptoms, mania or hypomania symptoms, and personality traits.

What they found

Most students were aged 20-23 years (83.7%). The study found significant correlations between PMS dimensions (depressive mood, anxiety, fatigue, irritability, depressive thoughts, pain, appetite changes, sleep problems) and mood disorder scores. There was also a significant relationship between PMS dimensions and declared personality structure. Age was significantly related to depressive mood, depressive thoughts, and mood disorder scores.

What it means for you

This suggests hormonal changes in PMS may be linked to mood and personality patterns. The study was cross-sectional, so we cannot prove hormonal changes cause mood changes. Most participants were young adults aged 20-23, so findings may not apply to women of other ages.
