Is internalized misogyny linked to worse PMS and dysmenorrhea?
Yes. Higher internalized misogyny was significantly linked to worse PMS and dysmenorrhea symptoms. However, we cannot tell if misogyny causes worse symptoms or if worse symptoms cause internalized misogyny.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 487 young women comparing their levels of internalized misogyny using standardized scales to their reported PMS and dysmenorrhea symptoms.
What they found
Higher internalized misogyny scores were significantly associated with worse dysmenorrhea (p<0.05) and worse PMS symptoms (p<0.05). Increased internalized misogyny was linked to increased severity of both conditions.
What it means for you
Negative attitudes toward women appear related to worse menstrual and premenstrual symptoms. However, we cannot determine whether internalized misogyny causes worse symptoms, worse symptoms cause internalized misogyny, or if another factor causes both.
