Survey study, 2023

Does quality of life and thinking patterns affect how bad PMS is?

Yes. Women with better quality of life have less PMS. Women with more unhelpful thinking patterns have more PMS symptoms.

Moderate study design 400 married university students in Tehran, Iran, in 2020-2021.

What they did

This cross-sectional study surveyed 400 married university students in Tehran during 2020-2021. Women completed questionnaires measuring PMS, quality of life, and thinking patterns. Researchers analyzed how these factors were related.

What they found

Better quality of life was related to fewer PMS symptoms. Better quality of life was also related to fewer unhelpful thinking patterns. The more unhelpful thinking patterns a woman had, the more PMS symptoms she had. The overall model fit the data well.

What it means for you

How a woman feels about her life and her thinking patterns may be connected to how severe her PMS is. However, we cannot tell from this study which came first. Poor quality of life could cause PMS, or PMS could cause poor quality of life. Also, the study was done in one university in one country.
