Non-randomised trial, 2016
Does progressive muscle relaxation reduce PMS symptoms?
Yes. Girls who did progressive muscle relaxation had a clear reduction in PMS symptoms compared to girls who did not. Their average severity score dropped from 114.13 to 97.67.
What they did
30 teenage girls at an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia were randomly split into two groups of 15 each. One group received progressive muscle relaxation sessions while the other group did not. PMS severity was measured before and after.
What they found
Girls in the relaxation group had their average PMS severity score drop from 114.13 to 97.67. Girls in the control group (who did not receive relaxation) did not show the same improvement.
What it means for you
Progressive muscle relaxation may help reduce PMS symptoms in teenagers. The study is small and from one school in Indonesia, so results may not apply widely. It is unclear how long the relaxation sessions lasted or whether improvements continued after the study ended.
