Survey study, 2019

Do women with acne flares before their period have higher oxidative stress?

Women with premenstrual acne flares had higher oxidative stress markers. A clear relationship was found between measurements on day 1 and day 21 of the cycle.

Early or limited evidence 24 women aged 18-21 with mild acne: 12 with premenstrual acne flares and 12 without

What they did

Researchers compared 12 women aged 18-21 with mild acne who had premenstrual acne flares to 12 without flares. They measured oxidative stress markers on day 1 and day 21 of the menstrual cycle.

What they found

Women with acne flares had higher oxidative stress markers than those without flares. A clear relationship was found between the two groups when comparing day 1 and day 21 measurements.

What it means for you

Oxidative stress (damage from cellular processes) may play a role in premenstrual acne flares. This was a very small study, so the findings need confirmation in larger research.
