Survey study, 2002
Does menstrual cycle phase affect asthma or anxiety symptoms?
No. This study found no significant connection between menstrual cycle phase and these symptoms. The sample size was not reported in the abstract.
What they did
Women with and without asthma and with and without panic attack history completed a psychological task during either the premenstrual or intermenstrual phase of their cycle and answered surveys about symptoms and anxiety.
What they found
Menstrual cycle phase did not significantly affect psychological or physical symptoms. Women with both asthma and panic reported more general distress and state anxiety than other groups. After hearing asthma-related scenarios, women with asthma showed decreased lung function.
What it means for you
This study found menstrual cycle phase did not affect these symptoms in this sample. It was limited because it did not report how many women were studied, making it hard to know how reliable the findings are.
