Survey study, 2022

Is premenstrual syndrome related to emotional or physical abuse?

There is only a very weak connection between premenstrual symptoms and reported abuse. Age affects reported abuse levels but not premenstrual symptoms.

Early or limited evidence 214 people aged 14 to 40 years attending gynecology clinics.

What they did

214 people aged 14 to 40 who attended gynecology clinics were surveyed about their premenstrual symptoms and their history of emotional and physical abuse using rating scales.

What they found

Participants reported medium levels of emotional and physical abuse from both parents. Premenstrual disorder scores were around normal levels. There was a weak positive connection between premenstrual symptoms and reported abuse. Age made a difference in reported maternal abuse but not paternal abuse or premenstrual symptoms. Marital status did not affect abuse levels or premenstrual symptoms.

What it means for you

The study found only a weak link between abuse and premenstrual symptoms. This is a small study from one country and clinic, so we cannot know if these findings apply to other groups of people.
