Cohort study, 2000
How common is PMDD among women in India?
In this study, 6.4% of women met the criteria for PMDD, which is similar to rates found in other countries.
What they did
Sixty-two Indian women volunteered to track their premenstrual symptoms over 2 menstrual cycles using a structured form. Researchers counted how many women met the diagnostic criteria for PMDD.
What they found
Four women (6.4%) met the full diagnostic criteria for PMDD. The symptoms varied quite a bit from woman to woman within the PMDD group.
What it means for you
PMDD occurs in India at rates similar to other places, suggesting it is a worldwide condition. The main limit is this was a small single study from one country with only 62 women, so we do not know if they were representative of all Indian women.
