What they did

Information was reviewed on approaches to manage pain in PMS, covering medications, physical therapies, and other methods.

What they found

Pain is one of the most common PMS symptoms, happening in the abdomen, lower back, upper back, head, breasts, muscles, and joints. Medication is often used but can cause side effects and dependence with overuse. Non-medication methods that can help include aromatherapy, hypnosis, massage, reflexology, heat, acupuncture, yoga, distraction, music, meditation, therapeutic touch, and electrical nerve stimulation. Some herbal products like motherwort, St. John's wort, and meadowsweet may help manage pain.

What it means for you

Many pain management options exist beyond medication, which could help reduce medication side effects. Main limitation: this reviews available approaches rather than testing which methods work best.
