Survey study, 2022
How many female university students have PMS and what do they know about it?
42.8% of university students had PMS and 78% reported it disrupted their daily routine. However, many students lacked awareness about PMS and did not know when to seek treatment.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 530 female university students in Saudi Arabia. Researchers used standard medical criteria to check for PMS and asked questions about knowledge, attitudes, and how much PMS affected the students.
What they found
42.8% had PMS, 37.7% were unaware, and 18.7% did not have PMS. Among all students, 78.33% (412 students) reported that PMS disturbed their normal daily routine. Many students lacked knowledge about when to see a doctor for symptoms.
What it means for you
PMS is common in female university students and significantly affects daily life, but many do not know enough about it to seek help. The study is from one university in Saudi Arabia, so the findings may not apply to all students everywhere.
