Does laser surgery to treat heavy periods help with PMS symptoms?
Yes. Women who had this surgery showed improvement in how severe their PMS symptoms were and how long they lasted. The improvement in PMS was linked to reduced bleeding.
Early or limited evidence 18 women with heavy periods treated with laser surgery
What they did
18 women had laser surgery on the uterine lining to treat heavy periods. They were checked for PMS before the surgery, then again 3 months later and 6 months later.
What they found
After surgery, women showed improvement in both the severity and duration of PMS symptoms. The reduction in menstrual bleeding was linked with the reduction in PMS symptoms.
What it means for you
This suggests the surgery might help PMS, but this was a very small study with no comparison group to see if improvements might have happened anyway.
