How common is PMS in nursing students and what symptoms do they experience?
About 63% of nursing students had PMS. The most common symptoms were fatigue (73%), pain (67.7%), and irritability (67.1%).
What they did
Researchers surveyed 319 female nursing students at a university in Gaziantep, Turkey. Students completed a questionnaire about their PMS symptoms during the premenstrual period and other health information.
What they found
63% of students had PMS. During the premenstrual period, 73% experienced fatigue, 67.7% had pain, 67.1% felt irritable, 64.9% had appetite changes, 63.3% had depressed mood, 60.2% had bloating, 56.1% had sleep changes, and 39.8% had anxiety. More than three-quarters of students said their daily life activities were negatively affected by PMS.
What it means for you
This shows that most nursing students experience PMS, with fatigue, pain, and irritability being the most common symptoms. About three-quarters had their daily life affected by PMS. The main limitation is that this only studied nursing students at one university in Turkey, so results may not apply to all women.
