Survey study, 2024

How common is PMS among teenage girls, and how severe is it usually?

In this group of 50 teenage girls, most had moderate PMS, with fewer having mild or severe symptoms. This suggests PMS is common in teenagers too, not just adult women.

Early or limited evidence 50 female students at a junior high school (SMPN 2 Sidoarjo) in Indonesia.

What they did

A descriptive study looked at 50 teenage girls at a junior high school (SMPN 2 Sidoarjo) in Indonesia. All eligible students were included and asked to fill in a questionnaire about PMS symptoms.

What they found

50% of the girls had moderate PMS, 42% had mild PMS, and 8% had severe PMS. The researchers noted that age and weight seemed to play a role in how PMS showed up.

What it means for you

PMS isn't only an adult issue; teenagers can experience it too, often at a moderate level. But this was a small, single-school study with no comparison group, so it can't say what causes PMS or how it applies elsewhere.
