Survey study, 2018

How common is PMDD in women with psychiatric disorders?

PMDD was far more common in women with psychiatric conditions than controls, especially among those with depression. The findings suggest PMDD is closely related to mental health conditions, particularly depression and bipolar disorder.

Early or limited evidence Psychiatric patients and controls at Zagazig University Hospitals in Egypt

What they did

Researchers examined psychiatric patients at a hospital using clinical interviews and a screening tool to diagnose PMDD and identify their psychiatric disorder.

What they found

PMDD was found in 40.5% of psychiatric patients compared to 7.6% of controls. Among psychiatric patients, PMDD was most common in those with depression (96.4%), followed by bipolar disorder (38.5%), anxiety (4.5%), and psychosis (1.8%).

What it means for you

PMDD appears to be closely related to psychiatric disorders, particularly depression and bipolar disorder. The main limitation is that the study was conducted at one hospital, and all participants were already seeking psychiatric care, so these results may not represent all women.
