Survey study, 2022
How common is premenstrual syndrome among teenage girls and how much do they know about managing it?
73% of girls aged 18-20 had PMS, mostly at moderate severity (69.86%), but 88% had only average or poor knowledge about managing it.
What they did
Descriptive survey of 100 girls aged 18-20 years using questionnaires about symptoms, severity, and knowledge about PMS management, plus measurement of body mass index.
What they found
73% had PMS using ACOG diagnostic criteria. 69.86% had moderate PMS. For knowledge about PMS and management: 88% had average knowledge, 9% had poor knowledge, 3% had good knowledge. Significant associations were found between PMS and age, and between knowledge and family income.
What it means for you
PMS is very common in young women but most do not know much about managing it, suggesting a need for education. The study was limited by convenience sampling of just 100 girls, so results may not represent all young women.
