Survey study, 2025
How common are PMS, anxiety, and depression in teenage girls, and are they related?
PMS is very common (89.35%), as are anxiety (98.72%) and depression (75%). Depression is linked to PMS, but anxiety is not.
What they did
Surveyed 704 teenage girls aged 11-17 about PMS, anxiety, depression, physical activity, and body measurements in Kerala, India.
What they found
89.35% had PMS, with mild cases most common (37.4%). Anxiety was reported by 98.72% and depression by 75%. A clear link was found between PMS and depression, but not with anxiety. Weight measurements and physical activity were not linked to PMS. Most girls (88.22%) had low to mild physical activity levels.
What it means for you
PMS with depression is very common in teenage girls and needs attention and support. Physical activity and weight alone don't explain PMS. The study was in one district in India, so results may not apply everywhere.
