Survey study, 2023

How common are PMS and PMDD in medical students, and does PMS affect work quality of life?

About 29.4% of medical students had severe PMS and 6.1% had PMDD. Students with PMS had significantly lower work quality of life, though many students dropped out of the second part of the study.

Moderate study design 228 undergraduate medical students

What they did

Researchers screened 228 medical students with a questionnaire to find those with severe PMS. Those who screened positive were asked to keep daily records of symptoms and rate their work quality of life.

What they found

Of 228 students screened, 29.4% had severe PMS and 6.1% had PMDD. Forty-seven students agreed to keep daily records, and 10 of these had severe PMS confirmed. Students with PMS had significantly poorer work quality of life than those without PMS. Students with medical conditions had higher rates of PMS and PMDD.

What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are common in medical students and affect how well they can work and study. The study is limited because many students did not participate in the second part, so the results about work quality of life are based on fewer people.
