Survey study, 2019

How common are PMS and PMDD in college girls?

About 14.3% of college girls in this study had moderate to severe PMS and 3.7% had PMDD. We cannot be very confident these figures apply elsewhere because this is a cross-sectional survey from one city.

Early or limited evidence College students in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, South India

What they did

Cross-sectional questionnaire study using the Premenstrual Syndrome Screening Tool with college students in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

What they found

14.3% had moderate to severe PMS and 3.7% had PMDD. Fatigue was the most common symptom overall, anger in moderate to severe PMS, and anxiety in PMDD. 82.66% with moderate to severe PMS and 100% with PMDD reported impaired college productivity. 85.6% did not perceive their symptoms as abnormal, and only 16.4% had consulted a physician.

What it means for you

PMS and PMDD substantially impact college students' academic performance, but most students do not recognize their symptoms as a problem or seek medical help. The main limitation is that this is one cross-sectional survey, so we cannot know if these patterns apply in other places or if symptoms cause the academic problems or result from them.
