Systematic review, 2026

What life experiences and personal factors influence how severe PMS is?

Adverse childhood experiences, stress, personality traits, and coping styles can worsen PMS. Physical exercise, social support, and resilience protect against severe symptoms. Research on these connections is very limited.

Moderate study design Young adults with PMS

What they did

Scoping review of peer-reviewed articles from 2015 to 2025. Searched PubMed, Medline, DOAJ, JSTOR, and ScienceDirect. Analyzed findings to identify psychosocial factors influencing PMS symptoms and severity in young adults.

What they found

Adverse childhood experiences, stress, personality traits, and coping behavior can influence PMS. Protective factors include physical exercise, good social support, and intrapersonal strengths. Research on these psychosocial determinants is very limited. Additional factors identified include cognitive style, resilience, body image issues, parenting influences, and social support.

What it means for you

A woman's past trauma, stress, personality, and how she copes may affect her PMS symptoms. Support from others and a healthy lifestyle help protect against worse symptoms. Much more research is needed to understand these connections and develop personalized treatments.
