Survey study, 2024

Is the PvuII-ESR1 gene variant linked to PMDD in South Indian women?

No. The study found no significant association between this specific gene variant and PMDD.

Early or limited evidence 35 women with PMDD and 35 control women aged 18-45 in South India

What they did

Genetic study in South India. Researchers recruited 35 women with PMDD and 35 control women aged 18-45 from clinic visitors. Participants completed a validated screening questionnaire and provided blood samples for genetic testing.

What they found

The PvuII-ESR1 gene variant was present in both PMDD and control groups at similar rates. No significant association between the variant and PMDD. The screening questionnaire successfully distinguished women with PMDD from controls.

What it means for you

This particular gene variant does not explain PMDD risk, at least in this population. The gene's overall role in PMDD remains unclear. Findings are limited to South Indian women and may not apply to other populations.
