Study, 2024

Does PMDD affect quality of life and depression more than regular PMS?

Yes. Women with PMDD had much lower quality of life and much higher depression than women with PMS.

Early or limited evidence 80 college students in India (40 with PMDD, 40 with PMS), aged 16 to 21 years, from Kapurthala, Punjab

What they did

80 college students in India took part - 40 diagnosed with PMDD and 40 with PMS. They were aged 16 to 21 years. Standard questionnaires measured their quality of life and depression.

What they found

Women with PMDD had much lower quality of life than those with PMS. Women with PMDD also had much higher depression than those with PMS.

What it means for you

PMDD (severe PMS) causes more serious problems with mood and daily wellbeing than regular PMS. The study suggests counseling, education, and lifestyle changes might help improve outcomes. The main limit is that it included only 40 people in each group from one area (Kapurthala, Punjab, India), so findings may not apply to women in other places.
