No. Menstrual distress did not appear to affect basketball performance. However, women with more menstrual distress were more likely to also have depression.

Early or limited evidence 70 female university basketball players in India

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 70 female university basketball players. During the premenstrual phase, they were assessed for menstrual distress using questionnaires and completed basketball performance tests. Anxiety and depression were also measured.

What they found

Basketball performance was not linked to menstrual distress, anxiety, or depression during the premenstrual phase. However, menstrual distress showed a significant association with depression.

What it means for you

In this group of basketball players, menstrual symptoms did not hurt their sports performance. However, menstrual distress appears connected to depression, which suggests that emotional wellbeing may be important even if physical performance isn't affected.
