Survey study, 1976
Does how energized you feel change during your menstrual cycle?
Yes. Women feel most activated and energized right before their period. Women taking birth control pills show a different pattern.
What they did
171 women filled out a questionnaire about how activated and energized they felt during the week before their period and during menstruation.
What they found
Activation was highest during the premenstrual phase across all four measures of activation. Women taking oral contraceptives showed different patterns, with lower scores on sleep and deactivation factors.
What it means for you
Most women feel most energized in the days before their period starts. If you take birth control pills, this pattern changes and you may feel less drowsy during this phase. This study relied entirely on women's own reports of how they felt rather than physical measurements.
