Does adding homeopathy to regular treatment help PMS or PMDD?
Yes, the homeopathy plus usual care group improved significantly more than usual care alone (p=0.03). However, the researchers said a larger international trial would not be practical because recruitment was extremely difficult.
What they did
Randomized trial across the Netherlands and Sweden (Germany dropped out due to legal issues). Women with diagnosed PMS or PMDD were assigned to either usual care plus individualized homeopathic treatment (28 women) or usual care alone (32 women) for 4 months. Symptoms were tracked daily.
What they found
After 4 months, the relative mean change in symptom scores was significantly better in the homeopathy plus usual care group than in the usual care alone group (p=0.03).
What it means for you
While homeopathy added to usual care showed more improvement than usual care alone, the practical challenges of recruitment and legal barriers in different countries suggest larger trials may not be feasible. The sample was small and limited to two countries.
