Survey study, 2017
Do teenage girls handle physical PMS changes well?
Most teenage girls in this study had good attitudes about the physical changes from PMS. Some body areas were harder than others for girls to accept, and attitudes varied by type of change.
What they did
Indonesian researchers surveyed 108 female seventh-grade students using questionnaires about their attitudes toward nine different types of physical changes from PMS.
What they found
Overall, 61.1% of girls had good attitudes about PMS physical changes. By body area: 70.4% had good attitudes about stomach and digestive changes, 76.8% about vascular and nerve changes, 61.1% about skin, 59.3% about breathing, and 50% about eyes. Some girls had poor attitudes, particularly about breathing (18.5%) and eyes (6.5%). Overall, 2.8% had poor attitudes about all changes.
What it means for you
Most teenage girls managed their feelings about physical PMS changes fairly well. Different body systems were harder or easier for girls to accept. This study was from one Indonesian middle school, so results may not apply to girls in other places or countries. Background information noted that about 85% of women of reproductive age in Indonesia experience PMS symptoms.
