Cohort study, 1997

Do sleep patterns change during the menstrual cycle in women with PMS?

No. This preliminary study found no cycle-related changes in sleep patterns in women with PMS or healthy women. However, only 3 women with PMS completed the study, so we cannot be confident in this finding.

Early or limited evidence 3 women with PMS, 6 healthy control women (who completed the study)

What they did

A prospective study at a university clinic where women with PMS and matched healthy controls had their sleep recorded during 2 consecutive nights in each of 3 different menstrual phases within 1 month. Nine different sleep parameters were measured.

What they found

No cycle-related fluctuations were found in any of the 9 sleep parameters measured in either the PMS patients or the controls. No significant differences in sleep patterns were found between PMS patients and controls during the same menstrual cycle phase.

What it means for you

Abnormal sleep patterns related to PMS or menstrual cycle phase were not demonstrated in this preliminary study. However, only 3 women with PMS completed the study, making it impossible to draw firm conclusions. Much larger studies are needed to adequately answer this question.
