What they did

Researchers gave a symptom questionnaire (the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool) to nursing students at a nursing school in Jammu, India, and checked how many had PMS or PMDD and how it affected their college life. This was a one-time survey, not a tracking study over time.

What they found

28.1% of students had moderate to severe PMS and 6.1% had PMDD. The most common symptom overall was fatigue or low energy. Among those with moderate to severe PMS, anger was the top symptom. Among those with PMDD, anxiety was the top symptom. College efficiency or productivity was affected in 81.3% of the PMS group and 100.0% of the PMDD group.

What it means for you

PMS and PMDD were common in this group of students and clearly got in the way of their studies and emotional wellbeing, so the authors suggest colleges should screen for and support these conditions. Because this was a cross-sectional survey of one nursing school with no comparison group or long-term follow-up, the results may not apply to all women or all student populations.
