Early or limited evidence 200 high school students in Shiraz, Iran (2013)

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 200 high school students in Shiraz in 2013. Researchers screened for PMS over two menstrual cycles using PSST questionnaire, then asked girls about non-drug methods they used to reduce anxiety and stress.

What they found

25% had PMS. Older girls had more anxiety and stress. There was no clear relationship between age and anger/irritability or sensitivity. Among girls using non-drug methods, 58% used yoga, 17.5% used prayer, and others used exercise techniques.

What it means for you

About 1 in 4 girls in this school had PMS. Many girls use non-drug approaches like yoga, prayer, and exercise to manage PMS, which may help them avoid medications. The study was done in 2013 in one Iranian city, so current practices may have changed and results may not apply to other places. Different symptoms may respond differently to these approaches.
