How common is PMS in young women, and do they have ways to manage it?
About 4 in 10 young women had PMS. Most found simple ways to manage symptoms like hot or cold drinks and talking to family.
What they did
A tracking study of 250 girls aged 18-25 at 4 colleges in India. They tracked PMS symptoms across at least 2 menstrual cycles using a daily symptom record and identified PMS using standard medical criteria.
What they found
PMS was found in 39.6% of the 250 girls. PMS was not related to age, education, family income, or other background factors. Most girls managed symptoms by having warm or cold drinks and talking to family members.
What it means for you
PMS is common in young women regardless of their background. Most girls naturally find simple, practical ways to cope. The main limit is that this was done only in one city in India, so results may not apply everywhere.
