Cohort study, 2009

How common is PMDD among preschool teachers in one city?

About 27.3 percent of teachers in this study had PMDD, which is higher than the 3 to 8 percent reported in general. Physical symptoms were the most bothersome.

Early or limited evidence 77 preschool teachers in Merida, Yucatan

What they did

77 preschool teachers in Merida, Yucatan filled out a daily questionnaire for 2 menstrual cycles from October 2006 to January 2007. Researchers used basic statistics to describe the frequency and types of symptoms.

What they found

27.3 percent (21 of 77 women) screened positive for PMDD. Physical symptoms like cramping were most frequent and often led women to seek medical help or self-medicate. Emotional or behavioral symptoms also caused problems with daily activities.

What it means for you

PMDD may be more common in this group than in other studies, but the group was small, all worked as teachers in one city, and 39 percent had other health conditions that could affect symptoms. Results may not apply to other populations. Daily tracking helped identify women with PMDD.
