Can relaxation methods like yoga help with the anxiety that comes with PMS?
This review suggests relaxation therapy, including yoga, may help lower anxiety linked to premenstrual syndrome, but it mostly draws on older studies rather than new data, so confidence in this is limited.
What they did
This is a systematic review discussing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and its impact on women's quality of life. It looks at relaxation therapy, including yoga, as a way to manage PMS symptoms, drawing on earlier research into relaxation and personality traits like anxiety and neuroticism.
What they found
The review lists common PMS physical symptoms such as headaches, breast tenderness, swelling, bloating, low energy, fatigue, and back and muscle pain. It states that relaxing muscles has been found to significantly reduce anxiety, and that older studies found anxiety and neuroticism linked to premenstrual tension could be successfully reduced with relaxation therapy.
What it means for you
Relaxation and yoga practices may help ease anxiety related to PMS, but the review does not report its own new trial numbers, sample sizes, or a clear methodology, and leans on decades-old studies, so the evidence here is general rather than strong proof.

Original abstract
Man and woman are gifted with equal rational capacity, with women constituting half of the world's population. Women have played many different roles in society and possess various strengths such as good listening and communication skills, flexibility to compromise, extensive experience in practical problem-solving, and caring for people. The presence of women is a crucial element in fostering and maintaining the local population. Elevating the health status of women is vital to improving the health of the entire community. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can be debilitating and negatively impact the quality of life (QOL) of those affected. Physical symptoms such as headaches, breast tenderness, swelling, abdominal bloating, heaviness, low energy, fatigue, back, and muscle pain are common. Relaxing one's muscles has been found to significantly reduce anxiety. Jacobson (1929), Lang, Melamed, Hart (1970), and Mohan and Chopra (1985) found that certain personality dimensions such as neuroticism and anxiety, which can create stress in women suffering from premenstrual tension, could be successfully reduced with the help of relaxation therapy. It is essential as a yoga practitioner to help individuals conserve their energy and physical and mental fitness through proper yoga interventions.
