Case-control study, 2014

Is internet addiction linked to PMDD?

Women with PMDD are more likely to have internet use disorder with greater severity. Stress and impulsivity appear to be important connections between the two.

Moderate study design 79 women with PMDD and 76 healthy community controls

What they did

Compared 79 women with PMDD to 76 healthy controls from the community using validated scales measuring internet addiction, stress, and impulsivity during both premenstrual and follicular phases.

What they found

Women with PMDD were more likely to have internet use disorder and showed greater severity during the premenstrual phase. They also had higher perceived stress and impulsivity. Impulsivity mediated the link between PMDD and internet disorder, while both impulsivity and stress mediated the link between PMDD and severity of internet use disorder.

What it means for you

Women with PMDD should be screened for internet addiction, especially those with high stress or impulsivity. Stress management and counseling for impulsivity might help. However, the study cannot determine whether PMDD causes internet disorder or if they share other common causes.
