Does cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapy help women with severe PMS control anger and distress?

Yes. In 30 women with severe PMS, those who received cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapy showed significant improvements in distress tolerance and aggression after treatment and at 3-month follow-up. However this is a very small study so results are preliminary.

Early or limited evidence 30 women aged 25-40 in Iran with premenstrual dysphoria referred to psychological counseling centers

What they did

An RCT with 30 women aged 25-40 in Iran with premenstrual dysphoria (severe PMS) referred to counseling centers (15 per group). The treatment group received face-to-face cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapy sessions. Distress tolerance and aggression were measured before treatment, after treatment, and at 3-month follow-up.

What they found

Before treatment, both groups were similar in distress tolerance and aggression. After treatment and at follow-up, the treatment group showed significant improvements in both measures compared to the control group, and these improvements remained stable at 3 months.

What it means for you

This psychological therapy may help women with severe PMS manage anger and cope with difficult emotions better. The sample is very small (15 per group) and from one location in Iran. The study did not report specific numbers for how much distress tolerance or aggression improved.
