Survey study, 2025

Does PMS affect how well nursing students can focus on learning?

Yes. PMS was negatively linked to learning focus and was one of five main factors affecting students' ability to concentrate.

Early or limited evidence 168 nursing students (2nd-4th year) at a university in South Korea

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 168 nursing students (2nd-4th year) at a university in South Korea. Surveys collected May 19-30, 2025. Measured menstrual attitudes, PMS, endocrine disruptor exposure, and learning immersion (ability to focus).

What they found

Mean scores: menstrual attitudes 4.13/7, PMS 3.13/5, endocrine disruptor exposure 3.07/5, learning immersion 2.92/5. PMS negatively correlated with learning immersion. Five main factors affecting learning immersion were menstruation duration, alcohol use, academic year, pain relief methods, and PMS, explaining 61% of variance.

What it means for you

This suggests PMS and lifestyle factors like alcohol use affect how well nursing students concentrate on learning. However, this is a cross-sectional study so we cannot prove causation. Study included only 168 students from one university in South Korea, so results may not apply widely.
