Can occupational therapy improve quality of life for women with PMS?
Yes, occupational therapy reduced PMS symptoms and improved quality of life in both younger and older women. However, this was a before-and-after study with no control group, so we cannot be certain the improvements came from the therapy.
What they did
Before-and-after study where women aged 18-30 and 31-45 received occupational therapy intervention. They completed assessments of PMS symptoms using a PMS questionnaire and quality of life using SF-36 before and after the intervention.
What they found
Occupational therapy intervention showed significant results in reducing PMS symptoms and improving quality of life in both age groups.
What it means for you
Occupational therapy including relaxation therapy may help women with PMS. The main limitation is lack of a control group, so we cannot tell how much improvement was from the therapy versus natural changes or placebo effect.
