Study, 2024

Does the Japanese version of a symptom-tracking tool work well for identifying PMS and PMDD?

Yes. The Japanese version of the Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP-J) is reliable and valid, and correctly identifies moderate-to-severe PMS and PMDD in Japanese women.

Moderate study design 113 Japanese women with regular menstrual cycles (recruited regardless of symptom severity).

What they did

113 Japanese women with regular periods filled out the DRSP-J for two menstrual cycles. Researchers tested whether the tool was reliable (giving consistent results) and valid (actually measuring what it should measure). They compared DRSP-J scores to other measures of anxiety, depression, and quality of life, and compared DRSP-J diagnoses to clinical diagnoses.

What they found

The tool was highly reliable. Symptoms fell into two groups: mood and behavior/physical symptoms. DRSP-J scores correlated well with anxiety, depression, and quality-of-life measures. Doctors' diagnoses of PMS/PMDD and the tool's diagnoses largely agreed (0.78).

What it means for you

The DRSP-J is a useful and accurate tool for identifying premenstrual symptoms and diagnosing PMS or PMDD in Japanese women. Women could use it to track their own symptoms. This was a validation study of a measurement tool, not a test of a treatment. The study included women regardless of whether they had severe symptoms.
