How common is PMDD among female students in Ethiopia?
PMDD is very common. About 54.5% of female students in Ethiopia have it, though prevalence estimates across studies ranged from 40.8% to 67.6%.
What they did
They searched 7 databases for studies published between 2003 and 2019 that measured PMDD rates in Ethiopian female students. They included 12 studies and combined the results to calculate average prevalence.
What they found
The pooled estimated prevalence of PMDD was 54.5% (95% confidence interval 40.8-67.6). Similar rates were found in high school and university students. Sensitivity analysis showed the result was stable, ranging from 51.2% to 57.2% when removing one study at a time.
What it means for you
More than half of female students in Ethiopia have PMDD, which suggests screening and treatment services are needed. This applies mainly to student populations in Ethiopia, not all women.
